9 Must Have Chicken Accessories For Kids
Owning chickens is a great experience for children. You can check out my 6 benefits of raising children with chickens here. But these tools and accessories can add more enjoyment. Kids love to feel like they’re a part of the process. The more involved they can be the more interested they’ll be in their feathered pets. I put a list of supplies that can help kids be more hands-on and get into the spirit of chicken ownership.

#1 Chicken Boots
My daughter and I both have waterproof boots, specifically, for use around the chicken coop. When we’re done the boots stay outside. I feel this is a must-have. Chickens are messy. Let’s be honest, they’re pretty gross. It’s good hygiene to have shoes designated for that purpose. Bonus if they’re cute and represent their purpose!
#2. Hand Washing Timer
Washing your hands after being around chicken is a must. Chickens again are messy, but more seriously they can carry salmonella. Adam Russell from Texas A&M AgriLife Communications discusses the risk here. This gives them a fun way to remember to wash their hands and helps them do it for the appropriate amount of time.
#3. Egg Collecting Tools
Collecting eggs is almost the best part of having chickens. This is the part my daughter always wants to be involved in. So, why not give them cute accessories for the job?
#4. Chicken Egg Scale
An egg scale will tell you the weight of the egg and what size category it falls in. A bit old fashion, but a super cool way to get your kids to understand weight. It brings math and science together beautifully.
#5. Tools – Their own chicken care cleaning tools
Most adult tools are too big for younger children making it hard for them to be involved in the much-needed cleaning up. These kids’ tools should give them the ability to feel included. It’s also a good idea to wear a mask while cleaning the chicken coop. You don’t want to breathe in the particles and dust stirred up.
#6. Chicken Toys
Chickens get bored too. Bored chickens can start picking on each other and possibly cause health issues or injuries. Getting kids involved to help pick out toys and set up stimulation for the chickens; is a great way to interact with each other.
#7. Chicken Coop Sign
We have our own chicken coop sign, it says “beware of tiny dinosaurs”. We love it, but there are so many signs to pick from. They can get personalized signs, funny signs like ours, and pretty signs. So many to choose from. It just adds some fun personal touch for the family.
#8. Chicken Clothes
I might be a big kid at heart because I love clothes that represent my hobbies. Most of all my passion for animals. They’re really cute things for kids to wear to show off their chicken-keeping passion.
#9. The chicken accessories that might be going too far….
These things may be a little extreme. They might be taking a step towards treating animals like dolls. I don’t usually agree with that, but if the animal isn’t stressed and they don’t seem to mind, I think it’s ok. It can be a fun way to interact. Please, never leave anything like these on your chickens unsupervised.
Your kids might enjoy taking their chicken for a walk and something like this would be the safest way. Going for walks is a good bonding time. Even if it’s unusual to take a chicken.
